The new website is almost ready. I just need some good feedback so I can finish it off.
I have big plans for Float Plan. I hope to expose as many people as possible to sailing. I always plan to offer a free website to skippers and crew, but with the new website I hope to eventually attract research boats, education vessels, charity voyages, charter boats and racing yachts by making the website easier to use and safer. I would love to get your feedback on the new website.
There are some final changes that still need to be done to the website, but I wanted to get your feedback as early in the process as possible. So please excuse the bits and bob I still need to tidy up. On that note, Crew Wanted and Boat Wanted listings won’t show up on the map just yet. The owners of the listings will need to input the correct location information or remove them (if they are old) once we switch over to the new site.
Here is a link to the test website: http://floatplan.wpengine.com/
It would be great if you could:Sign in and create an account - enter any informationCreate a listing (don’t worry you can make it up)Search for a listing and review another memberAnd just have a good look around
This is just a test account. Your original Float Plan account will be transferred when we make the change and this one will be deleted.
After you have taken a look around please fill out this survey. http://bit.ly/1OH96wY
Also feel free to add any comments you have to the group page or send me a message.
Huge thank you in advance,AndrewFloat Plan
Thank you for your message and feedback. The new layout has less of a forum type format, but still allows comments by the skipper or crew members, they can add photos to a trip and save Wanted items with a bookmark tool. We are working on the alert system now, this will alert you either as the wanted item is posted or weekly. We may look at adding a more detailed matching tool after we have received feedback about the new site. We agree, we want Floatplan members to be a close community, we always have this in mind. Please tell us what you think.
Thank you for offering to help. Yes, when we are ready we will post a link to the test site on this group, then you can post wanted ads, give people ratings and have a good look around before we go live.
I can not give you a date as we are going backwards to add the alert tool, but I will keep you posted. Please feel free to add any other ideas.
position issue: ok! the change you write seems to be very clear and easy to follow. Good job!!
to test it, can I post a fake request on both areas (crew and boat), just to see how do they work?
Glad you like the idea of the alert tool.
Having the word "position" was a mistake on my part, it is to confusing. The new form is very simple, first choice is Crew or Boat wanted, then the form loads according to the choice made, it then asks, Are you willing to pay the crew? (for crew wanted) or Position type wanted: Paid or Unpaid unpaid (for boat wanted).
Please share any ideas you have, I spend way to much time looking at it and can get lost.
a) "new wanted item alert": great!! this will improve visitors' loyalty to the website !! and will allow to spread the news to friends on time!! A great tool !!!
b) "crew vs boat wanted check box": great as well !! clarity is a must! But... the word "position" will be cancelled, I suppose ;-) , being a confusing specimen; if not, what is its meaning, then?
Thank you. Giancarlo
Thank you for the comments. The new layout has a much clear flow. It has one Notice Board and when a member adds a new Wanted item, they are asked to choose either Crew Wanted or Boat Wanted. We think this will clear things up.
We really like that you brought up the issue of being alerted when new wanted items are added. We were very close to launching the new website when we decided to go back and add a tool that will allow members to select to be alerted when new Wanted items are added, either as they are posted, daily or weekly.
Do you think these will work well or not?
reading some posts, I see there is still a lot of confusion between "crew wanted" and "position wanted". I think that the posting instruction should satte much more clear that:
a) "CREW wanted" is a post made by a boat owner who is looking for (some extra) crew/boat-mate for a passage/trip/boat job;
b) "POSITION" wanted" is a post made by someone (sailor or sailor-to-be ...) who is looking for a boat as crew/boat-mate member for a passage/sailing trip/job.
It will help every one for an immediate understanding of the nature of the posted search ...
Hi, Float Master,
i think that any notice should be posteds/sent as it arrives: tha day date will indicate its age (fresh or old ...), so anyone can judge if it's worth to reply or not. Of course, it would be ideal to have a sort of expiring time/date but it maybe complicates the post writing ( the author should also indicate the expiring date of his search, the website need to have a connnecting database linked to all the post dates, etc...... ) and its managing/storing/deleting ...
Could I ask when you would prefer to be notified of new crew wanted/boat wanted items? Would you prefer as soon as they are posted, once a week, twice a week, etc?
I hope you are all having a good weekendThank you
